Certificate in Community Paramedicine Care

An accessible, research-based certificate program designed to prepare paramedics for their expanded role as Community Paramedics. Creating connections between paramedic services, staff and community partners, the Certificate in Community Paramedicine Care bridges existing skills and experience with the advanced assessments, critical thinking and care planning required to excel in this growing field.

Program Outcomes

Understand the roles and responsibilities of the Community Paramedic and allied agencies
Effectively liaise with allied agencies
Prepare verbal and written documentation
Identify and manage compassion fatigue, burnout and secondary traumatic stress
Understand the psychological effects of chronic disease
Understand pharmacology as it relates to community paramedicine and common pharmaceutical treatments in chronic disease patients
Understand anatomy & physiology of the cardiovascular, respiratory and endocrine systems
Integrate knowledge of the aging process and common pathologies with assessments and treatments for the older adult patient

Analyze common disease processes treated by Community Paramedics
Perform basic, advanced and specialized assessments and appropriately refer/report on common disease processes treated by Community Paramedics
Perform assessments, treatments and care plans for common patient demographics seen by Community Paramedics
Perform specialized therapeutics used in Community Paramedicine
Design care plans
Apply introductory knowledge in topics related to Community Paramedicine care through elective courses

Enrolment Options

Enrolment options are not cohort-based meaning paramedic services can enrol students at any point in the year. The certificate program is designed to take as little as 4 months to complete depending on staff scheduling and allocated training time. Courses are offered in a self-paced asynchronous model.

Students receive a certificate upon completion. Program includes asynchronous competency and research-based didactic lessons and one program coordinator guide to aid in supporting staff. Includes:

Students receive an advanced certificate upon completion. Program includes asynchronous competency and research-based didactic lessons, a template for the skills program and a 240 hour clinical placement. (Note: specific clinical placement sites are coordinated by the paramedic service). Includes:

Continuing professional development

Community paramedicine programs may register students in courses independent of the certificate programs as part of the continuing education program or for general interest. Some services may wish to register non-CP staff for select courses as part of the service QA program.

Textbooks and resources

All textbooks and resources are included in the program fee and are embedded directly in the courses meaning students can seamlessly access and download textbook readings on their mobile devices or computer. *Textbooks are available in PDF and/or eBook format and are authored by university/college professors and experts.

Flexible learning

Courses are designed as micro-learning experiences allowing students to easily work through each module in short bursts. This method makes it easier for those with busy schedules to get the most out of their learning and aids in easy access to review material. Students may work through their courses on their laptop or mobile device through the course app.

Evaluations

Students receive formative (knowledge check points) and cumulative (final exams) evaluations in each course. Skills evaluations are introduced using virtual OSCEs. Evaluations are based on the content provided in videos, interviews, research papers and required readings. Content is competency-based meaning each course addresses specific competencies necessary for CPs to master. The final assignment is a capstone case study which integrates their knowledge and community resources.

Quality assurance

Instruction is provided using a range of resources and much of the content is reviewed or taught by healthcare experts in their respective fields for specific courses. We always recommend implementing a continuing education program for staff to ensure knowledge retention, patient safety and clinical competence and confidence. Each program coordinator will receive a training resource package to aid in supporting staff during their education and continued role as a Community Paramedic.
